100 Word Statement: 'Outside In'
Through model making and digital design, ‘Outside In’ explores the effect of allowing natural lighting in as well as natural colours into a space. The choice of two separate sources of natural lighting in addition to the size of the glass, outside colours can penetrate into the study space, creating a more dynamic environment. While natural light is important, strong and direct sunlight can be detrimental in a study space therefore, the use of frosted glass welcomes the colours and lighting from outside without harsh rays of light. Through communicative models and photoshop, the viewers can undoubtedly see the impact of bringing the ‘Outside In’.

Frosted Glass effect:
Allows natural light and colour in but avoids the harsh rays of sunlight. This is really important especially in my space that is a study room, the harsh light beams can often be detrimental.

Photoshop: Adding Interior Materials to Model

Adding interior materials to my Model:

I used Timber flooring, cladding on the walls, black glass framing and bricks for the exterior wall. Despite taking a while, I'm happy with the outcome.

Progressive Model Making

My First step was adding a frosted glass sliding door to increase natural lighting in the room, which I found was a success.

The next step was adding another source of light in addition to the sliding door to further increase natural lighting while also changing the room dynamics by adding another light source on the opposite side of the room. I liked the outcome but thought it needed further development to increase the impact of the 'squares' of light, which resulted in my next model.

My most recent model includes the previously added lighting features but maximises the effect by extending the feature wall of natural lighting on the right side. The shadows cast a nice geometric pattern which helps define the character of the room. I'm happy with the outcome of this model and can see the progression throughout all my models.

My Next Step?

I have been experimenting with different patterns that cast interesting shadows. My next step is to create an addition to the exterior of the room. Outside the sliding door there is a garage, in which the roof will be my focus point. I would like to create a nice pattern for the roof which will cast interesting shadows much like a privacy screen.

First Attempt at Photoshop: Adding Material and Scenery

Personal Reflection:

Things I like:
- Position of the model in terms of the background scenery
- Adding wall material (Cladding) was easier than expected and I like the look
- Reflection of the grass on the Sliding door
- Shadows really help ground the image but needs to be neatened

Things I can to work on:
- Shadows need to be worked on
- Possibly another roof material
- Perspective of the roof needs to be slightly altered
- Maybe some trees hanging over the roof?

Overall: Good first attempt and I'm happy with the look just needs some small adjustments
